The aim of this work is to analyse and quantify the transport of damaging salts and their influence on the moisture transport processes taking place in building materials. The effects of salt on moisture transport processes are characterised for wetting, drying and density gradients. A substantial part of the characterisation of diffusive ion transport processes is carried out, supported by the development of measurement methods, in order to determine effective diffusion coefficients and pore characteristics. In modelling ion diffusion processes, the influence of pore morphology, type and concentration of the pore solution, pore saturation, temperature and contact conditions is taken into account. For the numerical simulation of diffusion processes in multi-layer systems and the identification of transport parameters, a software system was developed that can be used for the analysis and optimisation of transport processes and experimental conditions. The models and methods developed are verified and applied on the basis of numerous experimental investigations. Their practical use is demonstrated by way of example for the application case of poultice desalination. The efficiency of these procedures could be considerably increased, since the underlying transport mechanisms and effective boundary conditions were specified more precisely.
