Not only since the Erfurt school shooting of 2002 has media education been confronted with the demand and desire for the prevention of risk behaviour. Yet a grounding of this requirement in media education theory has so far been lacking. This publication now closes the gap between theory and practice by anchoring media-educational action within prevention. The model developed and presented here, “empowerment through active media work”, explains the theoretical connections of media-educational prevention work and offers a basis for a theory-guided practice.
