Despite its extraordinarily high cultural significance both historically and in the recent past, Russian instrumental folk music has to date scarcely been researched. Using the example of a north-west Russian region, the present study examines the instrumentarium, style, repertoire, extra-musical functions, terminology and local differentiation of traditional instrumental music. Following a review of the multi-ethnic past of the area under investigation and an ethnographic description of the musically relevant situations (dance evenings, spinning evenings, patronal feasts), the most important musical instruments of the region are presented – among them button accordions of various types, the balalaika (including the drone playing technique, rare today), the wing-shaped zither gusli, as well as various wind instruments. Particular weight is given, alongside the learning process of the aspiring musician, to the formal principles constitutive of the performance practice under discussion. Finally, individual hypotheses concerning the historical roots of the instrumental culture of Pskov are put forward.
The appendix contains illustrations, transcriptions, analytical tables and further documentation. An accompanying CD with selected musical examples is supplemented by additional mp3 files running to several hours.
