Adolescents are socialised within particular social contexts in which they grow up. Alongside the parental home, important agents of socialisation include school, vocational training, the peer group and the mass media. In a survey of young martial artists, Oliver Langewitz and Yvonne Bernart examine the extent to which the practice of a martial art such as judo, karate or kickboxing not only trains physical fitness but also conveys moral values through the sensei.

The central thesis is that, through their club activities, these young people receive important training that shapes their personality and identity, helping them to cope better in interpersonal coexistence and to integrate more easily into social groups. Particularly noteworthy here is the fusion of Far Eastern and Western values, which are adopted into the habitus of the young martial artists as part of a transculturation process.
