Efficient maintenance ensures a durably high reliability of technical installations from an economic point of view. In order to increase efficiency, solutions should constantly be sought that improve occupational safety, shorten execution times and reduce the error rate, thereby both lowering maintenance costs and avoiding consequential damage. One such possible solution is the application of Computer Augmented Reality (CAR) technology. It offers the user situation-appropriate information and allows them to perceive this information together with the real environment, with the aim of facilitating human action in the real world.
The dissertation presents the ergonomic design of a usable, monitor-based CAR system. The prototype was named CARIHBA (= Computer Augmented Reality für InstandHaltungs- und BedienungsAnleitungen) and can quickly be turned into a product, since its hardware components are commercially available and the procurement costs are low. The suitability of the prototype for practical use was verified by user tests. The result indicates a high potential for use: compared with conventional paper documents, considerable time savings could be established when using CARIHBA. The subjective assessment by the test persons was also positive for the newly developed CAR system.
