The dissertation is situated in the field of “Cognitive Linguistics” and links metaphorology with dialectology, foreign language didactics and translation studies. The conceptual phenomena that precede the speech act are the focus of the investigation of processes of understanding within the foreign cultural domain of Andalusian Spanish.

The starting point is the phonetic description of this Andalusian language variety and the question of the constituents of metaphors, metonymies and synecdoches. From the insight that metaphors can only exist on the basis of metonymic oppositions and ellipses follows the further insight that such oppositions never form pure contrasts, but rather include one another in the form of synecdoches.

Theoretical dictionary meanings of typical Andalusian expressions, exclamations, collocations and set phrases are compared with the meanings as they actually present themselves to the population itself. The resulting divergences are subsequently explained. Particular attention is given to examining the effects of social group membership and conventions with respect to actions and speech acts, including their societal standards of value and evaluations.

Conceptual metaphors as described by Lakoff/Johnson, e.g. time is money or love is a journey, etc., categorize our thinking and acting. In the Andalusian of Guadix there are two conceptual metaphors, namely trasto and apañado, which not only categorize the thinking and acting of the population but even hierarchize it, depending on what God deems good or bad. Here trasto stands for those concepts that refer to indecency and apañado for those that point to the background concept of decency.
