Following our first publication in March 2004 (cf. Bernart/Billes-Gerhart 2004), numerous further thematic discussions and reflections on the subject area of media literacy arose. Two areas in particular were central components of this: 1. How does the media literacy of teachers compare with that of the (migrant) adolescents we had already studied? Do two clearly distinguishable worlds of media literacy emerge here, or are there more similarities than differences? What do the two groups know and think about each other with regard to media literacy? And 2. what role does abductive competence play in relation to media literacy? If abductive competence is understood as the ability to form explanatory hypotheses for a surprising phenomenon or a new idea, this can acquire particular significance precisely in dealing with media and the associated development of competencies. These two central areas are to be examined in this publication in both theoretical and empirical form.
