In the context of the present work, new and significant insights into the contrast mechanism of force modulation microscopy with modulation of the sample position were obtained. Whereas in the past problems have frequently arisen in the interpretation of FMM data because the influence of buckling on the detection behaviour of the atomic force microscope was not taken into account, this work investigated in particular the influence of lateral forces on the motion of the measuring tip and their effects on the detection behaviour as a function of the modulation amplitude.
