This study set out to investigate the suitability of organofunctional silanes for the treatment of solid wood and particles for the production of particleboards with improved properties, in particular dimensional stability. For this purpose, solid wood was treated by the vacuum-pressure process and particle material in a particle reactor with four organofunctional silanes at various concentrations. Of particular interest was the influence on dimensional stability and on the mechanical-technological properties.
The aspects examined were weathering stability (outdoor weathering and in an accelerated weathering device), mould and blue stain infestation, and surface hardness (Brinell). In order to investigate the hydrophobic effect of silanes, the contact angles on the surface of treated solid wood specimens were measured and the capillary water absorption and sorption were examined. The coatability with commercially available alkyd- and acrylic-based systems was also investigated.
The suitability of silanes as adhesion promoters was investigated in tensile shear tests after bonding with MUPF resin, EPI, PUR and PVAc. In order to examine the influence of the silanes on the bonding properties, the gelling time of MUPF resin was investigated with the addition of the silanes at various concentrations.
For the production of particleboards, particles were pre-treated with silanes in the gluing drum and subsequently cured and dried in the particle reactor. On the particleboards produced from these particles, the bending strength, the bending modulus of elasticity, the internal bond strength and the internal bond strength after boiling were measured. Furthermore, thickness swelling, water absorption and moisture absorption were investigated. The weathering stability of treated particleboards was investigated in an accelerated weathering device. The formaldehyde content of the particleboards was determined using the perforator method. The silicon content and the silicon distribution at the specimen surface were determined by SEM-EDX analysis.
