In recent years, criminal cases in which children in particular fell victim to serious acts of violence have repeatedly attracted great public attention. To solve such cases, the DNA profile of the traces found is compared with the DNA profile of a defined group of possible perpetrators in order to establish the identity of the person who left the trace. The police obtain these comparison profiles by inviting people to participate voluntarily. The author examines this fascinating subject and the problems associated with it comprehensively and systematically — an area that has so far been largely neglected in the literature.

Following an introduction to the scientific foundations, the book presents the case of “Christina Nytsch”, in which a girl from the Oldenburger Münsterland region was raped and murdered. This was followed by a mass DNA screening which, with some 18,000 people summoned in 1998, caused a sensation as the largest of its kind worldwide to date. This section at times reads as excitingly as a crime novel; alongside a detailed analysis of the media coverage at the time, the author has also drawn on numerous items of background information from within the investigating team that are not accessible to the public.
