Mahmoud Mohamed Zeid’s dissertation examines genetic diversity and heterosis in faba bean (Vicia faba L.) using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) molecular markers. The study analyzes 79 elite inbred lines originating from Asia, Europe, and North Africa to assess genetic relationships and evaluate the reliability of AFLP-based analyses. Cluster analysis and principal coordinate analysis are used to investigate genetic similarities and identify relationships between different breeding materials.

Additionally, the research examines 18 European inbred lines and 62 F1 hybrids to determine whether molecular marker-based genetic similarities can predict hybrid performance and heterosis. Field trials evaluate seed yield, thousand-seed weight, and plant height. The findings demonstrate that AFLP markers are valuable for assessing genetic diversity and organizing breeding material, particularly when pedigree information is incomplete. However, genetic similarity estimates based on AFLP markers do not reliably predict hybrid performance or heterosis within the studied European elite gene pool.
