Social software has become a popular buzzword in the software industry due to the increasing use of applications such as Facebook and Twitter. The development of such applications takes place in an unorganized manner and usually consists only of an implementation phase. Insufficient use is made of the experience gained to date in the field of software engineering. The engineering approach to creating software, and in particular the modelling of software, is neglected. This work examines whether and how such approaches can be applied specifically in the development of social software applications. It presents the requirements that social software places on a process model and on modelling, and uses an example to explain the basic elements of a pragmatic modelling approach. Keywords: social software, Web 2.0, process model, modelling, development of social software, social software engineering, user generated content.
