Pre- and perinatal risk factors for the development of later cognitive and motor developmental delays are well documented. It remains unclear which factors primarily favour emotional child psychiatric disorders. In this study, 260 patients with child and adolescent psychiatric disorders (birth cohorts 1995-2005) were examined in a single-centre, retrospective design. The effects of psychosocial and birth-related complications were differentiated with regard to clinical disorders. The analysis revealed significant associations between psychosocial aspects and emotional disorders. Even positively connoted events, such as the parents’ marriage during pregnancy, can constitute a stressful event for the child. The mode of delivery had no influence on the development of mental disorders. Nor could consequences of complicated births in the sense of a “birth trauma” be demonstrated. The study suggests that, alongside “functional” antenatal preparation, aspects of psychosocial support should be brought into focus at an early stage (including aspects of attachment, clarification of intrafamilial transferences, attitude towards birth). In this context, suggestions for psychosocial support of pregnant women within the framework of outreach services are given and difficulties are pointed out.
