This study addresses girls’ increased participation in educational goods. It is a historical study, a coherent overall investigation of girls’ schooling in Baden-Württemberg from the post-war period into the 21st century.

The examination of the recent past of the state of Baden-Württemberg from the perspective of girls’ education is a further building block in documenting women’s long path towards equality of opportunity.

Drawing on pedagogical journals, publications of the Ministry of Culture (decrees, curricula) and statements by political parties and churches, the differing views of the pedagogically oriented public on the question of girls’ education are traced. Subsequently, the female educational expansion is documented quantitatively on the basis of data from official educational statistics.

The proportion of girls in the various types of school, the Abitur rate, girls not promoted to the next grade, deferred from school entry or enrolled early, foreign female pupils, as well as the proportion of female students – all these are subject areas that are dealt with on the basis of the data material and that substantiate the increasingly strong female dominance in general education school systems.

A comparison of the female educational expansion in Baden-Württemberg with the situation in the federal states of Hessen and North Rhine-Westphalia places the findings of the investigation in a more meaningful framework.
