The central role of chemistry in today’s society can be seen in the number of chemical products of everyday life, e.g. high-performance materials, petrochemicals or pharmaceuticals. Especially in the field of high-performance materials, be it ceramic materials, composite materials or substances with liquid-crystalline properties, remarkable progress has been made over the last 30 years. In particular, molecular machines, switching and logic elements represent a research field in its early heyday, which shows high potential.
Molecular switches are a promising approach for future data storage, especially when considering the aspect of the constant advance of miniaturisation. Novel optical semiconductor elements in particular will play a significant role in the future due to the advantages of storing and reading out information by means of light. Apart from the still relatively low durability, there is a lack of efficient synthetic methods for corresponding photoswitchable molecules. A synthesis that is intended to arouse economic as well as academic interest must be distinguished above all by its efficiency and economy.
By combining several bond-forming steps in a single transformation, domino reactions offer a possibility for the efficient construction of complex structures while simultaneously reducing the number of individual synthetic steps. The economic and ecological advantages of this approach become particularly apparent when considering the amounts of required reagents and solvents as well as the waste products obtained, which can be considerably reduced compared with the classical formation of individual bonds with subsequent work-up and purification steps.
The present work deals with the efficient synthesis of new molecular switches using various palladium-catalysed domino reactions and their investigation with regard to their static and dynamic photochemical properties.
