The stocktaking of the Austrian national AV archive on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary includes accounts of the institution’s history and present situation and offers perspectives on its future development. An important place is given to the digitisation of the historical holdings of AV media (audio and video): how it is to be carried out professionally and what measures are necessary for the permanent preservation of digital media. The role of the internet as a platform for access in the present and the future is examined, and the scholarly projects underway at the Mediathek are described.
