The world is drawing ever closer together: culturally, economically, scientifically and politically. A larger unity is emerging, which many already refer to as world society. This process encounters resistance, friction and difficulties everywhere. These must be overcome above all through an awareness of the unity of humankind and through self-transformation. Europe, too, must face this process in order to clear away existing difficulties. The aim of this text is to make a contribution to this end.

The European model, which has its origins in the Enlightenment, has been highly successful. With the help of the then new guiding values of freedom and self-determination, cultural-legal, scientific-political and economic-technical spaces of freedom have emerged over time. Many sub-areas of society have consequently developed positively within Europe over the past two hundred years or so: higher education and the education system, the economic and infrastructure sector, the welfare state and the health system, as well as urban and regional development. Europe’s influence on similar developments throughout the world was also considerable.

Today the guiding values of freedom and self-determination require supplementation, for in the various sub-areas of society the signs of the overstraining and overextension of these guiding values are increasing. This applies above all to the economic sphere and is evident here in the impending collapse of the global financial and ecological systems. But it also applies to the cultural, legal, political and scientific spheres. Everywhere smaller corrections are needed in order to make the European model more attractive again and to become part of a world-societal development. In part, there are already more or less pronounced recent developments and improvements in these areas. The new guiding values of consciousness and unity as well as inner peace and self-transformation will help to achieve further improvements, both in the economic sphere and in the other sub-areas of society.
