According to Michael Byram, the intercultural speaker is characterised by the following attitude (savoir être): “curiosity and openness, readiness to suspend disbelief about other cultures and belief about one’s own”.1 It would remain unsatisfactory, however, if the learning of languages, together with the approach to other cultures, were linked without further mediation to the imperative of becoming curious and open as well as of demonstrating a readiness to view other cultures without prejudice and one’s own culture with detachment. The following study therefore examines what anthropological foundation this savoir être presupposes. The application of relevant insights from New Phenomenology to the field of intercultural pedagogy is associated with the expectation of lending greater force to the programme of educating intercultural speakers.
