The increase in displays combined with deteriorating visibility conditions raises the visual demand placed on car drivers. The newly developed functions of the software module ‘RAMSIS cognitive’ can improve the ergonomic design of new vehicle models, particularly with regard to visibility conditions. These functions comprise physiological-visual analysis functions relating to the driver’s eye as well as geometrical-optical properties of the vehicle. In addition, various visibility assessment methods and external visibility analyses are carried out using the example of visibility-critical traffic scenarios.

Finally, two series of experiments in a driving simulator using test subjects demonstrate in what way drivers are impaired by visual obstructions. In the course of this, previously unknown gaze, movement and behavioural strategies of drivers are identified and described.

The results of this work reveal various options for improving traffic safety with respect to driver, vehicle and road.
