The self-control training described in this study was developed to strengthen self-control capacity in the workplace and thus to counter mental health complaints preventively. The training was conducted in one work area of a federal administration and evaluated over a period of 16 months. By imparting knowledge on how to deal with self-control demands at work as well as on self-observation, self-communication, self-evaluation and self-reinforcement, and on emotion regulation, the mental strain effects of self-control were to be reduced. Following participation in the self-control training developed within the framework of this dissertation, improvements can be observed with regard to individual indicators of mental workload strain, so that an important contribution was made to the prevention of mental health complaints resulting from dealing with self-control demands in the workplace—one that should be continued through ongoing measures such as regular supervision.
