The state of the art for bypass cleaning of lubricating oils in heavy-fuel-operated large diesel engines is a density separation process using disc separators. However, cleaning with these centrifugal cleaning systems has operational disadvantages and entails high costs.

Against this background, the aim and objective of this work is the identification and qualification of a novel cleaning process for lubricating oils of heavy-fuel-operated large diesel engines that does not entail the aforementioned disadvantages.

The focus is on clarifying all relevant questions concerning the process engineering of a newly designed cleaning system for the given application. Filtration can be qualified as a solid–liquid separation process.

The central results relate in particular to the characterisation of the process engineering problem, as well as to the modelling and the governing principles of the filtration process and of filter regeneration by upstream backflushing. A further focus is the examination of ultrasound in lubricating oil, whereby the benefit of an ultrasound-superimposed backflush can be demonstrated in particular.
