The process concept of emulsion splitting in the presence of compressed to supercritical gases was applied to a novel method for the phase separation of stable disperse multicomponent and multiphase systems. The aim of the work was the complete, accelerated and economical splitting of used dispersions into high-quality oil and water split phases, whereby the former should allow material recycling and the latter should meet the conditions for discharge into the wastewater system. The novel emulsion splitting process builds on a previous project on the treatment of contaminated waste oils with negligible water content [Alex 2009]. There, with the addition of compressed propane, hydrocarbons could be recovered as a valuable material fraction from waste oils contaminated with ageing-related and undesirable foreign substances and impurities, for material processing into high-quality lubricants. Compared with those waste oils, the disperse material systems of the present work are extended by two components, water and surfactants.
