Increasing demands on lightweight design and functional integration in vehicle construction call for processes that optimally combine economy and quality in a highly productive process. Primary shaping processes in particular, and especially high-pressure die casting, combine the possibility of manufacturing near-net-shape products with highly complex structures within the shortest process times.

In die casting, even simple undercuts can only be realised through the use of elaborate slides. Hollow structures cannot be produced. Conventional sand cores are unsuitable, as they do not meet the process-specific requirements.

Lost cores made of salt, sodium chloride, offer a solution here. After casting, they are removed with a high-pressure water jet, thus enabling the production of thin-walled structural components with higher stiffness while simultaneously reducing weight.
