From today’s perspective, forest dieback (Waldsterben) could be understood as a large-scale socio-political experiment conducted on the German population.
It was successfully tested – presumably under the auspices of Hans-Dietrich Genscher and led by Peter Mencke-Glückert – how, through the use of the media, a merely asserted phenomenon can be employed to justify a far-reaching change in values.
In doing so, the media were able to demonstrate their power to disseminate information. Since this information had been prepared by fewer than a dozen people, the complete dependence of the media on those who generate and process knowledge – that is, the utter powerlessness of the media – became apparent at the same time!
In our view, knowledge of the course and success of a large-scale experiment such as forest dieback is today more relevant than ever with regard to our stance towards the already initiated step of a change in values on the basis of climate change and the demand for climate “protection” derived from it.
