Since the liberalisation of the European agricultural market, the markets for agricultural inputs and products have been subject to strong price fluctuations, whose basic tendency has been a marked increase in factor and product prices. Overall, input prices rose by 40 % between 2005 and 2012, with particularly pronounced price increases in arable farming for energy (37.6 %), seed and planting material (51.1 %) and fertilisers (96.8 %) (DBV, 2012, p. 207). The resulting increases in production costs, combined with the likewise markedly higher agricultural producer prices over the same period, amounting to an aggregate 34.4 % – and here in particular for cereals (138.3 %) and oilseed rape (172.8 %) – create a clear incentive for a site-adapted intensification of crop production (DBV, 2012, p. 207). This recent development is supported by the supply and demand conditions expected on world food markets in the coming years in view of a growing world population, increasingly scarce land resources and an expansion of the production of renewable raw materials (DBV, 2012, pp. 229-231).
