Nine different 7 Ah batteries were aged under defined conditions, opened and examined electrochemically as well as analytically. It could be shown that structural changes of the cathode surface lead to overpotentials. This results in an above-average increase in internal resistance and in capacity losses. Furthermore, it is shown that the loss of cyclable lithium due to additional SEI re-formation or new formation likewise leads to capacity losses, but rather accelerates the reaction kinetics of the anode processes. Finally, the impact of the operating conditions (temperature, current, voltage window) on the ageing of lithium-ion batteries was discussed.
