Children enter primary school with differing prior experiences, abilities and talents. Teaching that sets the same tasks for all pupils can therefore never do justice to all children (Wodzinski 2007, p. 3). Inevitably, this would lead to some pupils being over- or under-challenged. Dealing with learning groups that are heterogeneous in terms of achievement therefore requires learning opportunities designed to be so “diverse” that all pupils “can keep up in class […] and achieve the best possible individual performance” (Von der Groeben 2011, p. 1): the demands of the tasks set must be adapted to the abilities of the individual pupils; they must be neither too difficult nor too easy. For an increase in competence can only occur if the tasks challenge the children – without, however, overtaxing them (Guber 2011, p. 13).
