International findings indicate that depressive symptoms and disorders occur with increased frequency in people with diabetes mellitus. This elevated prevalence of depression can presumably be explained by diabetes-specific burden factors that have a negative impact on the mental health of people with diabetes. Furthermore, depressive disorders in diabetes are regarded as a particularly unfavourable comorbidity, since negative psychological and somatic interactions are presumed to exist, resulting in a poorer prognosis of diabetes with regard to diabetic sequelae as well as life expectancy. However, since the current body of evidence originates predominantly from the English-speaking cultural sphere and its generalisability to Germany has not yet been established, this work examines prevalence rates, diabetes-specific risk factors and adverse effects of depressive disorders in German individuals with diabetes on the basis of extensive samples from tertiary patient care.
