This study examines contemporary alternative theatre in Brazil, here referred to as Teatro Contra a Barbárie (TCB), illustrating it with theatre groups from São Paulo such as, among others, Companhia São Jorge de Variedades, Grupo XIX de Teatro, Grupo OPOVOEMPÉ, Grupo Tablado de Arruar and Núcleo Bartolomeu de Depoimentos. The performances analysed reveal a strong tendency towards ritual, which must be understood per se as an open, inviting and above all aesthetic interplay between actors and audience. The scenic moment is composed through a break with the structures of classical theatre, choosing new spaces for its performances, integrating the spectator’s participation into them and manifesting itself through the displacement of the scene. In order to demonstrate the degree of the spectator’s involvement in the scenic moment conceived by these groups, a typology was developed. This study points to a connection between the TCB and models of groups belonging to the international avant-garde movement, framing their productions, however diverse, within a uniform movement and situating their performances within the era of virtual reality.
