Investigations of pipe flows at high Reynolds numbers remain a major challenge to this day because of the complex mechanisms occurring within turbulent pipe flow. It is therefore necessary to establish suitable experiments in order to resolve turbulent dynamic processes and thus provide the knowledge needed to understand them fully. For this reason, the present dissertation deals with the design and construction of a new pipe wind tunnel with a focus on high Reynolds numbers. In addition, this work comprises initial experimental investigations and results. These show that the newly designed and constructed facility is suitable for carrying out precisely such investigations of turbulence. This statement can be confirmed on the basis of intensive studies of the behaviour of the development length in pipe flows under various boundary conditions. Further experiments to determine the wall shear stress using different methods have shown that considerable difficulties, and consequently deviations in the results, arise at this point. This in turn is directly reflected in the scaling behaviour of the mean and fluctuating velocities. Besides introducing the new CoLaPipe and discussing the first results, this dissertation includes a comprehensive literature review.
