Media coverage repeatedly places the rare earth metals at the centre of public debate, since these elements have by now become an important raw material for many high-tech products. One reason for this lies in their valuable luminescent and magnetic properties, which are already widely applied in our everyday lives. Cluster compounds represent an interesting field of research within the area of polynuclear rare earth metal complexes, as they combine the subfields of solid-state and molecular chemistry and allow the investigation of the size dependence of certain physical properties.

One topic of this work comprises the synthesis of pentadecanuclear cluster compounds whose coordination sphere is functionalised with various peptoid ligands. The photophysical properties of these compounds were determined in the solid state and in HeLa cells. The in vitro luminescence investigation shows that the use of peptoid ligands causes the clusters to be taken up into the interior of the HeLa cells, where they luminesce. Furthermore, the structure of the clusters in solution was explored by means of ESI mass spectrometry as well as gHMQC and PGSE NMR investigations, and their stability in different solvents was confirmed.

In addition, this work investigated the influence of the ligands used, the size of the central metal and the base employed on the established synthetic method for clusters. The clusters thus obtained were fully characterised and examined with regard to their magnetic properties.
