L’Escole francoise et italienne (1608) and the Epitome molto facile (1608), two works by Jean Saulnier published in a single volume at the beginning of the seventeenth century, have in common the use of the Italian language as target and/or descriptive language. Nevertheless, they differ considerably in terms of the subjects they address: whereas L’Escole francoise et italienne is a pedagogical grammar intended for French speakers wishing to learn Italian, the Epitome molto facile is a philosophical text written in Italian prose, containing reflections on the arts and sciences in vogue at the time. Moreover, it also touches on aspects of physiognomy. These works, after having fallen into oblivion for more than 400 years, are re-edited in the present volume. In a separate introduction, Seilheimer adds an analysis focusing on the parts of speech in L’Escole francoise et italienne.
