Visiting Gdańsk is easy and appealing today. If you choose the scenic route along the Baltic Sea, you set out from Hannover in the direction of the old Hanseatic cities of Wismar and Rostock. You leave Greifswald behind and head for the German-Polish border region with the islands of Usedom and Wolin. From there you follow the Polish coastline, crossing a lonely, typically northern landscape with impenetrable pine forests that in places reach right down to the water, passing Köslin, Stolp and Lauenburg, in order finally, after a journey of a good 800 kilometres, to reach Gdańsk from the north (fig. 2).
