For some years now, research has increasingly addressed the occupational demands and health-related strains experienced by teachers, along with the associated health-induced early retirements (e.g. Schaarschmidt, 2005; Hillert & Schmitz, 2004; Rothland, 2013; Bauer et al., 2007). The health and performance capacity of teachers are essential for the quality of schooling and must be maintained and promoted. An important task consists in investigating teachers’ occupational health resources more closely in order to turn schools into health-promoting places of living and learning – a “good healthy school” (Brägger, Paulus & Posse, 2005).

This study examines a potential resource for health promotion within the organisation of the school that has received little attention to date: affective commitment (AC) – teachers’ emotional attachment to their school. The aim of the study is to gain insights into the influence this attachment has on teachers’ health and well-being, and into the causal relationships that exist between AC and teacher health. There is a research deficit regarding this question.
