Companies today face a wide range of challenges, of which globalisation, an increasingly volatile competitive environment, shorter product life cycles and new technologies represent only a selection. In order to increase corporate value continuously, they must not merely avoid risks but actively take them on in order to exploit the associated opportunities and unlock the corresponding value creation potential. This requires structured and effective risk management.
The author provides a transparent account of the state of risk management in German listed industrial and trading companies. In addition, the connection between risk management and selected corporate indicators and policies is analysed using statistical methods. The findings imply that decisions on capital structure policy, liquidity policy and dividend policy as well as on risk management should be taken by management and other decision-makers in close coordination. This can enable companies to make consistent use of the advantages of risk management and to benefit from them comprehensively.
