Fossil fuels make a substantial contribution to the provision of electrical energy worldwide. In Germany, the share of hard coal and lignite in the total amount of electricity produced was around 43% in 2014 1. The CO² emissions inevitably associated with this are suspected of having a negative impact on the global climate 2. There are therefore efforts to reduce emissions of climate-relevant gases in order to limit the increase in the global average temperature to 2 °C above pre-industrial levels 3. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), achieving this goal requires a reduction in CO2 emissions of 50–85% by 2050, relative to the year 2000 4.
