Großfischlingen is really a quite inconspicuous village in the Südpfalz. It is a small place with just 600 inhabitants today.
And yet this place is bound up with a rich and by no means uninteresting history.
From its first beginnings around 500/600 AD (first documentary mention in 772 AD), when a Frank named Fiscilo established his farmstead nearby, the village gradually developed until, around 1280, we encounter the name “Großfischlingen” for the first time. The village somehow continued to develop under changing rulers, even if only sparse information on this is available, since all the records concerning the village (apart from a few documents held in monasteries) were destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. The village was now completely devastated and wiped out. Only for the period thereafter can we draw on one testimony or another and from these allow a picture of the life and the lived reality of the villagers from 1650 to 1950 to emerge.

It was a hard life to which our ancestors here were exposed.
The author first attempts to present life in a farming village between the years 1940 and 1955, as he still remembers it. He then sets out to capture something of the history of the village, its inhabitants and their religious as well as social life.
And behold: the small, inconspicuous village of Großfischlingen suddenly comes to life, and a world full of exciting stories and unfamiliar insights into the home of our ancestors opens up to the reader, supplemented by many pictures from both older and more recent times.

The author, Prof. H. Habermann, was born in Großfischlingen in 1938. He spent his childhood and youth there. After his Abitur and university studies, he moved his residence to Darmstadt for professional reasons. In recent years he has devoted himself to the history of his home village, to which he still feels very closely attached today.
