In this interdisciplinary work, the dielectric properties of continuously tunable ferroelectric materials are investigated with respect to their behavior under high-power operation. The investigations carried out range from the material level, through the modeling of components, to the synthesis of tunable radio-frequency circuits.

A CAD approach for modeling tunable composite ceramics is presented. In the proposed model, additional degrees of freedom are introduced, whereby a more accurate description of two-phase composite materials is demonstrated compared with already established methods.

First systematic investigations of tunable ferroelectric-based parallel-plate capacitors and uniplanar interdigital capacitors (IDCs) for high-power applications are presented. Design guidelines for high-power operation are outlined. The investigated components are implemented as part of a compact, tunable matching network together with a GaN HEM transistor. The resulting tunable amplifier is characterized in detail with respect to its properties.
