Constant critical questioning is an inherent component of every form of scholarly activity. A look back reveals that research and development have always found fertile ground where there was scope to cast doubt even on firmly established doctrines. Such action goes hand in hand with the courage of the “person acting out of conviction”.

Doubt and conviction are undoubtedly among the decisive characteristics of change. This aspect seems almost to be lost in a method-driven world in which the view has become established that, for every challenge, the appropriate tool can be found in the virtually unlimited toolbox of the digitalised society. New coinages intended to emphasise the extreme degree of novelty of these tools ultimately cannot disguise the banality of this mono-dimensional perspective.

Naturally, the question arises in this context as to why matters are approached in this way. Five hundred years ago, a single Augustinian monk sparked the reformation of a system that spanned the globe. The driving forces behind the actions of Dr Martin Luther were doubt and conviction. His example illustrates the real challenge: personalities drive change. What use is the most innovative tool in the hand of a waverer?

The courage to act at the same time requires a high degree of reliability and transparency in order to ensure that the “new” is made available not only to a small circle but to everyone. The faculty of the master’s programme ZukunftsDesign has opted for this path of openness. The concept of this programme, unique in Germany, which uses innovative educational approaches to promote the future viability of Upper Franconia, is presented in detail in this interdisciplinary publication.

We wish the ZukunftsDesign team precisely that sustainable strength for constant renewal which the past attests to as an indispensable characteristic of every lasting change.
