In this work, a prismatic spouted bed was investigated experimentally and modelled using the CFD-DEM approach. The aim of the investigations was to relate the dynamics of the gas phase to the respective flow regime of the particles and to obtain information on the stability of the respective regime from the pressure signal. To this end, the pressure drop time series from the experiments and simulations were analysed using Fourier transformation and methods from deterministic chaos theory.
The information obtained on the mechanisms by which instabilities arise was applied to develop an apparatus geometry with exceptional flow stability.
Further investigations covered the influence of the apparatus depth and of particle wetting on flow stability as well as on particle and gas dynamics.
