This is the first publication devoted specifically to the mental-historical and psychohistorical contextualisation of the individuals who worked as executioners. Historically, very different legal, religious, political and social connections become apparent, which call for a differentiated understanding. There is therefore no generally, transhistorically valid psychological concept; rather, the individuals appear in each case against their own contemporary historical background, from the ancient world to the present.
