During the Golden Age of Islam between the 8th and the 13th century, Arab national culture was the world leader in science. For this reason, Arabic was at that time the scientific language of the age par excellence. Western thinkers learned Arabic and translated numerous Arabic works into Latin. Today, it is the Arabs who depend on learning the languages of the scientifically and technologically superior Western countries in order to be able to benefit from their progress. An indispensable prerequisite for this are professionally sound, reliable specialised dictionaries. I hope that the present work will make a contribution to making science more readily comprehensible where Arabic meets German, and vice versa. May it be an incentive for the scholars of the Arab world to translate the modern science and technology of the West into Arabic, so that Arab students and researchers, the hope and future of their countries, may benefit from it.
