Spectators at football matches occupy a role of their own, which to a certain extent makes them participants in the experience of attending a match: by supporting their own team with chants, shouts and applause, they create a distinguishing quality of the German Bundesliga – the stadium atmosphere. This study places precisely this phenomenon, as an essential characteristic of German football, at its centre. Stadium atmosphere and mood are attributed an entertainment value of their own; they are regarded as an important factor in attending matches. Alongside the significance of atmosphere for stadium attendance, the study approaches the relevance of the concept of atmosphere for spectator research. It further addresses the significance of different spectator groups for the stadium atmosphere. An essential feature of this research project is its strong connection to real-world conditions: this study does not develop the role and significance of stadium atmosphere for football spectators on an abstract level, but analyses it in its immediate setting – in the stadium, with spectators.
