In the face of countless and highly variable pathogens and disease patterns affecting crops throughout the world, a robust and adaptable diagnostic method is essential to guarantee food safety and seed quality in a globalised market. In this work, innovative techniques are applied in order to combine highly sensitive genetic methods with fast, robust and easy-to-use bioinformatics. It is a profile-based classification method capable of screening many samples for a large number of very different pathogens simultaneously, without requiring in-depth knowledge of the underlying molecular background. The complex bioinformatics that normally accompanies NGS is greatly reduced, which permits its use on everyday hardware and also by people without a background in bioinformatics. This method, which is able to rapidly screen genetic samples for a wide range of disease patterns and pathogens, has the potential to fundamentally change the diagnostic landscape.
