Michael Walzer is today one of the most important political philosophers, having lastingly shaped the relevant discourses since John Rawls’s A Theory of Justice (1971). Numerous interpreters classify him as belonging to the communitarianism that emerged in response to Rawls. In this volume, the author demonstrates on the basis of rich material that this assessment is only partly appropriate. This becomes clear thanks to the sources to which Walzer himself refers and which have shaped his thinking. The author presents a successful application of political philosophy and theory to a concrete political subject, namely Walzer’s theory of pluralism and universalism to the Council of Europe, in particular to the Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine, the Oviedo Convention. To this end, she shows both historically and systematically how the Human Rights Convention and the Oviedo Convention can be interpreted with Walzer’s approaches, both in their contents and in the manner of their genesis. This illustrates how concretely politically relevant and practicable Walzer’s theory is.
