Stone impact simulation deals with self-projected stones thrown up by the tyre onto the body and chassis. At present, stone impact assessment is carried out purely geometrically by determining the angles of impact in the simulation tool “Pebbles II”. The methods currently available for simulation do not allow any predictions to be made regarding the damage to surfaces caused by stone impact.
The aim of this work was to improve the informative quality of stone impact simulation with regard to surface damage. Two different approaches were chosen for this purpose. On the one hand, practical tests were used to determine the ejection profiles of stones by means of high-speed camera recordings on a test vehicle. On the other hand, surface damage caused by stone impact was investigated experimentally under defined conditions using a drop tower test rig in order to identify the main damage parameters. In order to bridge the gap between the driving tests and the drop tower tests, damage patterns from the field were evaluated analytically and compared with the damage from the drop tower. The findings from the practical tests were incorporated into the simulation tool “Pebbles II” with the aim of representing the resulting surface damage in a stone impact simulation.
