The concepts of >honour< and >violence<, examined here in historical and interdisciplinary perspective, are suitable indicators of individual and societal levels of development. Even in cross-cultural conflicts, they allow inferences about thinking and behaviour and potential patterns of action. This is a social science contribution to a realistic assessment of aspects of international migration. What conclusions can be drawn for political governance? These include the institutional reconquest of public space, in particular the return of the state’s monopoly on the use of force, and interventions under the rule of law in private spheres of life to counter urban no-go areas with street gangs. In view of very different, in part contradictory civilisational standards, there are no quick overall solutions; what is lacking, however, are resolute political responses to protect the liberal constitutional state from further erosion.
