The importance of maintaining and promoting employee health is becoming increasingly significant in the context of demographic change. In order to secure international competitiveness, industrial companies are required to reduce work-related health risks, which can be achieved through the user-appropriate design of work systems.
To enable this, methods of physical risk assessment are applied in industrial practice. These provide information about the existing physical strain on employees within a work system. At present, this assessment of strain is mostly based on the consideration of an ‘average person’. However, since the real employee population only rarely corresponds to this assessment basis, a relative error in the result of the risk assessment is tolerated.
In order to close the gap described, this work presents an approach for integrating person-related parameters such as gender, age and body height. The field of intralogistics is examined in particular detail, as a very diverse workforce is frequently found there. The chosen field of investigation moreover offers its own strain characteristics, such as the pulling and pushing of heavy loads, whose physical demands are likewise taken into account in the risk assessment developed here.
The user-group-related risk assessment developed in this work constitutes a corrective as well as preventive instrument for work system design in industrial practice. It enables the assessment of highly mixed user populations and a differentiated risk estimation. Previously undetected deficits are revealed, thus contributing to an increase in knowledge regarding the user-appropriate design of work systems. The programmed calculation is designed to be parameterisable, which also allows its use in other cultural contexts.
