In 1492 the Europeans arrived in the “New World”, which was later to be called America — in the Caribbean, to be precise. The process of their settlement in the new territories and the Hispanicization of the regions was accompanied by the production of numerous texts, many of which are available today as editions or manuscripts. Reading these texts, which are essential for understanding these historical processes and for studying American Spanish, involves many laborious obstacles, such as the almost illegible graphy of the manuscripts and the fact that it is no longer known what these texts actually are, for whom or for what purpose they were written, and to which writing traditions or text types they are to be assigned. An edition of texts written in the Caribbean from 1492 to the end of the 17th century has been published by the RAE (Guzmán 2013). This study provides a contextualization of these texts, intended to serve as an “introduction to their understanding” for historians, philologists and other interested readers.
