The rules established by the National Solid Waste Policy in Brazil, as well as other legal frameworks, put an end to the duality of the old collection–final disposal system, introducing into the waste chain certain obligations that demand greater technical complexity and strategic partnerships, thereby ensuring a greater use of solid waste within an economic cycle, generating, above all, new business opportunities and green jobs, as well as avoiding the saturation of natural resource extraction and protecting the climate.

Nevertheless, the technological obstacles resulting from both insufficient technical and regulatory capacity still need to be overcome. By combining efforts, it will be possible to bring together the capacity to integrate a sustainable waste management system into a reliable production system within an environmentally sound legal framework.

It is the articulation of three dimensions — market, education and research — that we present in this publication. Bringing together different professionals, all with recognised expertise, makes it possible to democratise access to knowledge, strengthening the most fragile links in solid waste management, to foster new generations of researchers and professionals, to encourage the pursuit of patents, to develop technologies and, above all, to build the critical mass needed to secure clear results for the economy and for society, in which the promotion of sustainable solid waste management ceases to be a vision of the future and becomes a present reality.
